2020 Palencia Mourvèdre
Primarily used for blending, Mourvèdre is sometimes bold and tannic as a stand-alone varietal. And although there’s plenty of heft with this wine, it also carries a near-elegant quality and a savory/earthy flavor profile. Plum, fig, and black cherry flavors come to the forefront with nuances of Earl Grey tea, vanilla cola, and dried plum on the finish. This wine is a stunner and winemaker Victor Palencia has tamed the varietal with a bit of a “bad boy reputation’ by giving its dark fruits center stage, framing them with supple tannins, and making it instantly enjoyable. Sourced from the beautiful Canyon Ranch Vineyards in the Yakima Valley AVA, this Mourvèdre ripens gracefully with long growing seasons. Harvested at the peak of ripeness, the wine is fermented in small batches and then aged in 100% French oak for 14 months.
